On my way home from my doctor’s appointment the other day, I saw the new Mitsubishi Eclipse on the road. I’ve seen them before, but I always forget how different they look — very sleek and sporty, rather like a Nissan Z.

Have you ever heard of “house envy” — the desire to always live in a house bigger and better than your own? You might say that I have car envy. I constantly see cars on the road that I could totally see myself driving. If my finances didn’t prohibit it, I would probably run out and buy my newest desire every time.

It does make sense why I would like the new Eclipse, though. I’ve always been a sports car person, and with my Z not running, I’m experiencing manual transmission withdrawals — our other car is an automatic (boo). Since the Eclipse reminds me so much of the newest model Z cars, it’s natural that they would attract my attention.

Maybe what I should do is head down to the Mitsubishi dealer and see if I can test drive one — in a manual transmission, of course. It might give me my “driving stick” fix and get me through until my car is running again — plus it would be really nice to see how the Eclipse feels on the road!

Lately, low interest rates and car dealerships’ specials have made it a good time to shop for used cars. With the economy the way it is, car sales have suffered along with everything else, and dealerships have been offering spectacular deals and freebies in order to lure buyers back. This has created a buyer’s market where the buyers benefit from good prices and wide selection.

Now, though, it seems like higher interest rates may be in the cards. While your natural instincts may be to hesitate to buy a new car right now, in actuality it means you need to get on it. If you’ve been thinking about getting a new car, whether for the better gas mileage or to take advantage of some of the deals right now, you need to do it sooner rather than later. If you buy your car now, you can lock in a lower interest rate before they start going up.

So if you were thinking about starting to look for used cars in Georgia, Colorado, or wherever you live, I suggest getting started on it soon. If you get a jump start on it now, you can lock yourself into a loan on a great used car before the interest rates get prohibitively high!

I have got to admit, the eastern seaboard as a shocking poor showing of nationally protected lands. There’s Acadia in Maine, the Cape Cod seashore in MA, and there are little forests here and there, some mountains, but nothing with the beauty and grandeur of Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon until you hit the Everglades. To get to the Everglades I flew into Miami, got a Miami car rental, and headed straight over.

From there, though, I found out about a couple other sites, like Dry Tortugas off of Key West, so I returned the car at an easy rent a car location and picked up another Florida car hire that I could return with a little more flexibility, and headed out to the cluster of seven islands they call Dry Tortugas. I also wanted to check out the Biscayne National Park, which kind of seems like the Everglades with islands instead of swamp.

I will say this, though: in Acadia I was never poking the water hoping a giant prehistoric beast wouldn’t snap up at me. I am not a fan of the alligator. Frankly I’m not entirely sure who is; they really freak me out. Give me ice any day over tepid waters that may or may not eat you.
